Like Clay

Devotional Journal: Reflection on Jeremiah 17:9

“Deceitful above all things, and desperately wicked”-Jeremiah 17:9. This is how the heart is described by our LORD in Jeremiah. A heart that is bent towards evil thoughts and intent. Thankfully we have a heart doctor who can fix this problem. The God who described the condition of a sin-stricken heart is the same God who is the antidote for a new heart.

A heart is like clay. In the hands of a potter, it is molded after the thoughts and intent of its maker. The maker of our heart desire that we give our heart to Him. For He can fashion and use it for good. Your heart may be broken, damaged, or twisted. No matter the condition, no heart is beyond the reach of Jesus.

In Jesus Christ we receive a new heart. What was once hard as rock is now soft enough to be bent towards repentance. It opens up to trust the LORD instead of its own interest. Destructive thoughts, harmful intentions, everything begins to shift towards self-less love.

LORD, may we pray that our hearts will always be directed by you and your desires. Apart from you our heart will seek to fulfill all fleshly desires. Help us to trust your good intentions, knowing that your Spirit will always fill our hearts.

"The heart is deceitful above all things, and desperately sick; who can understand it?"- Jeremiah 17:9 (ESV)
