Devotional Journal: Reflection on Luke 12:15
The value of your life cannot be measured by the possessions you have. Possessions are temporary, but life is eternal. Often times we have this reverse. We live as if life is temporary and our possessions are eternal. This way of thinking causes us to place the value of our life based on what we have. This way of living burdens us with a weight so heavy that no measure of possessions can uphold.
Jesus gives us a warning and declares the truth about the value of life. “Then Jesus said to them, “Take care, and be on your guard against all covetousness, for one’s life does not consist in the abundance of his possessions.”-Luke 12:15 .The danger here is covetousness/greed. When we place possessions over life itself, we enter into this danger. Greed’s appetite is never satisfied. It cannot enjoy what it has because of always looking for what is next.
As I ponder my own life, I see times where covetousness crept into my life. I thought to myself “if only I could have this then I would be completely satisfied”. Come to find out, the satisfaction quickly faded away and now I am back in the state of wanting. What happened? My life became possessed by possessions. The created thing could not completely satisfy my eternal soul. My life can only be satisfied and sustained in the LORD who created me. He is the value of my life and by the cross He validated my life.
15 And he said to them, “Take care, and be on your guard against all covetousness, for one’s life does not consist in the abundance of his possessions.”-Luke 12:15
