Under what influence?
Our mind is being influenced every day. Thoughts that are good, bad, and ugly. Actions stem from thoughts if such thoughts are meditated. What happens if your mind is under the influence of an external factor like alcohol? Then as a result your thoughts and behavior will become amplified. Your mind will no longer be governed by you.
The foolish king
Another king, another thoughtless decision(s), and the loss of his life and kingdom over one decision. Belshazzar, king of Babylon the son of Nebuchadnezzar committed grave actions from being drunk. While drunk his pride was amplified. He commanded that the gold and silver vessels from the temple of God would be brought out. The purpose of this command was for Belshazzar and all those who were in His company to drink from these vessels. This is bad but it gets even worse.
A mind of ignorance
After drinking from the vessels, they went into worship and praised the gods of gold, silver, bronze, iron, wood, and stone. At this point Belshazzar completely lost his mind. The series of acts here is a complete disregard of respect and reverence to the LORD. Who alone is the only God worthy of praise. Who has created gold, silver, bronze, iron, wood, and stone. The God who gave Belshazzar life and the kingdom.
Be of a sober mind
We are called to be sober minded, clear headed. That the decisions would come from a place of self-control. LORD, may we respect and honor you in thought and action. When we are led astray may we receive grace and mercy. Help us to submit our thoughts unto you and keep us from having a mind that is lost. In the name of Jesus, Amen.
