Devotional Journal: Reflection on Genesis 3:8-14 & Jeremiah 19
When the word counsel comes to mind, I often think of an office setting with a lounge chair. In this setting the one in need of counsel begins to spill what has been weighing heavily on the heart. The counselor listens with undivided attention and patience. After all that has been said, the counsellor digests the information and begin to respond with insight and wisdom.
What happens when you receive counsel that is void? Adam, the first person who took heed of void counsel caused the downfall for all humanity (Gen 3:8-14). Such counsel is dangerous and effective in the wrong way. The promises it proclaim are empty. Void counsel is prevalent in this day and age. Most of the time It is cloaked through social media. Yet, if we are not careful what may seem innocent can be the cause of our downfall.
Godly counsel is needed every day. By the Holy Spirit and His Word He guides us through every aspect of life. We fight this because we “believe” we know what is best for us. However, nobody knows you more intimately than the God who created you. He sees your desires and knows what you need. If we take heed to His counsel, we will discover that His way is truly all that we need.
And they heard the sound of the LORD God walking in the garden in the cool of the day, and the man and his wife hid themselves from the presence of the LORD God among the trees of the garden. But the LORD God called to the man and said to him, “Where are you?” And he said, “I heard the sound of you in the garden, and I was afraid, because I was naked, and I hid myself.” He said, “Who told you that you were naked? Have you eaten of the tree of which I commanded you not to eat?” The man said, “The woman whom you gave to be with me, she gave me fruit of the tree, and I ate.” Then the LORD God said to the woman, “What is this that you have done?” The woman said, “The serpent deceived me, and I ate.”- Genesis 3:8-14 (ESV)
“Thus says the LORD of hosts, the God of Israel, behold, I am bringing upon this city and upon all its towns all the disaster that I have pronounced against it, because they have stiffened their neck, refusing to hear my words.”- Jeremiah 19:15 (ESV)
