Doubt: The Enemy of Faith

Devotional Journal: Reflection on James 1:5-8, Mark 9:21-25

God has given us Himself. A gift undeserved, a promise that extends beyond this current life. Giving Himself is giving His All. If we have all than coming to God in faith should be a no brainer. I said “should” because even though we are able to receive beyond what we ask, we often don’t because of doubt.

Doubt is the biggest obstacle to faith. It creates distractions and alternative routes that are not designed for the best outcome. It limits what God is willing to do because it is a form of unbelief. Doubt delights in fear and with fear comes the unwillingness to grow.

I’ve had my fair share of doubts. Not believing that He is able and willing to do beyond what I can imagine. Yet, every time I do trust Him, He always exceeds my expectations. I cannot see the outcome when I place my faith in God. Though, I know the outcome will be good based on what He promised (Romans 8:28).

LORD, when doubt begins to creep in the depths of my heart, may I be reminded of your constant faithfulness. Even the simple things of just the beating of my heart remind me that you are sustaining me. Forgive me for my doubts and strengthen my faith in those moments when I need to trust you. Amen

5 If any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask God, who gives generously to all without reproach, and it will be given him. 6 But let him ask in faith, with no doubting, for the one who doubts is like a wave of the sea that is driven and tossed by the wind. 7 For that person must not suppose that he will receive anything from the Lord; 8 he is a double-minded man, unstable in all his ways.-James 1:5-8

21 And Jesus asked his father, “How long has this been happening to him?” And he said, “From childhood. 22 And it has often cast him into fire and into water, to destroy him. But if you can do anything, have compassion on us and help us.” 23 And Jesus said to him, “ ‘If you can’! All things are possible for one who believes.” 24 Immediately the father of the child cried out and said, “I believe; help my unbelief!” 25 And when Jesus saw that a crowd came running together, he rebuked the unclean spirit, saying to it, “You mute and deaf spirit, I command you, come out of him and never enter him again.”-Mark 9:21-25
